5 Amazing Gelato Shops In Florence, Italy

After only studying abroad in Florence over a month, I am proud to say that I have assessed a heaping scoop of gelato shops. From touristy to non-touristy, to mom and pop stands to chains - these are 5 amazing gelato shops in Florence, Italy.

I am not an expert by any means, but I have picked up some skills finding quality gelato. And one of the most important is to source gelateria’s that do not pile the gelato in mountain forms. Usually this indicates that the gelato was not freshly made and has probably been sitting there for a considerable amount of time. Another includes finding shops that do not have artificial flavors or colors seeping into the cream such as bright, hulk colored greens for pistachio or over the top candy flavors.

1. Badiani

Speaking of pistachio, one of my favorite pistachio gelatos I have tried here was at the beginning of my semester, yet it is still my number 1. It hails from Badiani. First, this is a chain, but it’s a gem because it produces fine quality gelato and has some history since it has been churning since 1932. This shop is popular, but it’s a wonderful find because you are guaranteed good service (in my experience), and it’s in a good location in relation to major sights. Trust me, you will try the creamiest, most indulgent pistachio gelato here.

2. Grom

Grom is also a fabulous chain gelateria that is in a great location, one located near the Duomo. This one is trendy and somewhat expensive, but deduces a fair price for the quality you receive. They boast seasonal, creative flavors. They are also mindful of their environmental impact, showcasing sustainable practices in their shops.

3. Gelateria Beatrice

Gelateria Beatrice is my favorite shop. It is out of the way from the center of Florence going towards S. Ambrogio, but oh is this rich, mouth watering gelato worth the walk. This is a small shop with a modest storefront, hidden in a more residential area. I tried both the caffe mouse and the dark chocolate mousse gelato. A bit of a mistake because I paired two richest flavors together, so I would suggest balancing out the lavish flavors with a punchy fruit gelato because the shop has a lot to offer on that end, too.

4. Il Procopio

Another shop I admire is Il Procopio. Il Procopio features classics and notable Florentine spin offs such as their carnival flavor. This lovely gelato joint is situated in the Santa Croce neighborhood and is the perfect spot to try traditional Tuscan Gelato!
