The closest airport is the Porto Airport. I would suggest spending a few days in Porto before visiting Aveiro. From Porto you can either rent a car, take a bus, or take the train. Aveiro is only an hours drive from Porto so it is an easy day trip if you have an extra day in Porto. I took the train from Porto and it was easy.

You could go to Portugal any season and have great weather. In the summers  Aveiro is around 80 degrees F and in the winter around 60 degrees F.

If you are looking for good surf go in the winter as the waves are better.
