About The Railway Trail

The Railway Trail was once Bermuda's Railway. Bermuda's train ran from Somerset Village all the way to St. Georges between 1931 and 1948. The train was an affordable way to get from one side of the Island to another. The train closed in 1948 because it was not making enough money to pay for upkeep. In 1964 the Railway Trail was created. Today The Bermuda Railway Trail is recognized as one of the most beautiful walks in the world.

Somerset Village To Bermuda's Botanical Garden

how to do the bermuda railway trail

I started my first day of hiking at an adorable coffee shop Da Island Shack to enjoy a lovely cup of coffee and croissant. The Railway Trail starts in Somerset Village, just off of Beacon Road. Visit my Railway trail map to see the exact location. From there you will walk until your first break at Bob's Valley Road.

This part of the trail is full of greenery and manicured paths, perfect for biking.

The next break in the trail is at Middle Road and Somerset Bridge. The trail picks back up after you cross Somerset Bridge. From Somerset Bridge I walked to Vesey Nature Reserve (2 km) which took me about thirty minutes. From Vesey Nature Reserve there is a short break in the trail where you will have to walk on Middle Road. The trail picks back up on Middle Road. I stopped along the way at the adorable Wadson's Farm for a drink and to pet some donkeys.

The next break in the trail is, again, on Middle Road and the Railway Trail picks back up at Barn's Corner Park. If you can take a detour off of the Railway Trial to see Gibbs Lighthouse and Horseshoe Bay. From here the Railway Trail has no breaks until you get to Bermuda's Botanical Garden in Hamilton.

This first day of walking was around 13 miles! It is an easy and flat walk, but time consuming.

Coney Island To Palmetto Park Trailhead

This part of the Railway Trail was definitely my favorite. The walk from Coney Island To Palmetto Park is along the coast and has views of Bermuda's crystal clear waters and rocky coastline.

The trial starts in Coney Island, a uninhabited island full of trails and lagoons. From Coney Island walk south to the Coney Island bridge and admire the blue water and planes landing and taking off.

Keep walking south on the Railway Trail and you will get to Bailey's Bridge, one of my favorite spots on the trail. The first split on this part of the trail is at Shelly Bay Park. Walk through the park and you will be right back on the Railway Trail headed to the stunning Flatts Village! Once you get to Flatts Village stop for some lunch at Village Pantry.

From Flatts Village keep on walking south to Palmetto Park. This day of hiking was around 9 miles!
